Doreen is a full-time artist who has been painting for over 30 years—ever since she came to live in Lisdoonvarna. Her greatest inspiration comes from the sea and the coast along it. ‘I’m never spoiled for choice here; there’s loads to paint,’ says Doreen. Her studio is open to the public from March until the of October, and you can also have a wander through her beautiful gardens when you stop in.
Inside tip or gem to share with visitors?
‘My studio,’ says Doreen, laughing. ‘It is a bit of a hidden gem.’
Favourite thing to do?
‘Paint and garden. I’m doing my first love.’
Dinner with anyone living or dead?
‘Bruce Springsteen. I love his music and I reckon he must be a very interesting man.’
Favourite place to go on holidays?
‘Italy. I love the arts, the atmosphere, the people, the buildings.’
Best thing about living in Lisdoonvarna?
‘Where I am, I love the view. It’s pure heaven to sit there between March and November. That’s what I love most I suppose.’ Doreen looks out at the Cliffs of Moher in the distance, fields between here and there. ‘Looking out the window.’
What cheers you up?
‘The light in my gallery. Morning light especially.’
Who inspires you?
‘I love Monet’s work and the other French impressionists.’
